Appointment of bishop of São João da Boa Vista, Brazil

The Holy Father has appointed the Reverend Fr. Eugênio Barbosa Martins, S.S.S., former superior general of the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament, as bishop of the diocese of São João da Boa Vista, Brazil.

Curriculum vitae

Msgr. Eugênio Barbosa Martins, S.S.S., was born on 5 September 1960 in Araguari, diocese of Uberlândia, State of Minas Gerais. He carried out his studies in philosophy in the Faculdade São Bento in São Paulo-SP and in theology in the Instituto Teológico São Paulo-ITESP in São Paulo-SP.

He gave his religious profession on 25 January 1984 in the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament (Sacramentinos) and received priestly ordination on 24 January 1988.

He has held the following offices: vocational promotor and formator of aspirants and postulants in Belo Horizonte-MG (1988-1996); master of novices in Uberaba-MG (1999-2002); parish priest of the Ressurreição in Uberaba-MG (1997-2002); provincial superior (2002-2010); provincial bursar (2010-2022); parish priest of Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem in Belo Horizonte-MG (2006-2011); president of the Latin-American Conference of Sacramentinos and the Conference of Religious of Brazil (Belo Horizonte Section).

From 2011 to 2023 he served as superior general of the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament in Rome.

 

Appointment of bishop of Catanduva, Brazil

The Holy Father has appointed Bishop José Benedito Cardoso as bishop of the diocese of Catanduva, Brazil, transferring him from the titular see of Castellum minus and the office of auxiliary of São Paulo.

Curriculum vitae

Msgr. José Benedito Cardoso was born on 12 September in Angatuba, diocese of Itapetininga, State of São Paulo. He carried out his studies in philosophy in the Seminary of São Carlos Borromeu in Sorocaba-SP and in theology in the Instituto Teológico São Paulo (ITESP) in São Paulo. He was awarded a licentiate in canon law from the Faculdade de Direito Canônico São Paulo Apóstolo in São Paulo-SP. He attended the course in law in the Faculdades Integradas de Itapetininga-SP.

On 23 Novembeer 1986 he received priestly ordination, and was incardinated in the archdiocese of Sorocaba. With the creation of the diocese of Itapetininga in 1998, dismembered from Sorocaba, he was incardinated in the new cirumscription.

He has held the following offices: parish priest of Bom Jesus in Alambari-SP and vicar general of Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres in Itapetininga-SP (1987); diocesan chancellor (1998-2010); rector of the diocesan seminary (2004-2006); vicar general (2012-2019; parish priest of São Roque in Itapetininga (1988-2019); member of the Presbyteral Council and the College of Consultors; diocesan coordinator of the liturgy; professor of canon law; judicial vicar and president of the diocesan tribunal; defender of the bond and judge of the Interdiocesan Ecclesiastical Tribunal of Sorocaba.

On 23 January 2019 he was appointed titular bishop of Castellum minus and auxiliary of São Paulo, receiving episcopal ordination the following 15 March. Until now he has served as episcopal vicar of the Lapa region of the archdiocese of São Paulo.

In the Region Sul 1 of the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (NCBB) he was the bishop referent for basic ecclesial communities, for the Commission for the defence of life, for the pastoral care of the earth and for religious.

Within the NCBB, he is a member of the Episcopal Pastoral Commission for the Liturgy.
