Appointment of office heads of the Dicastery for Evangelization, Section for first evangelization and the new particular Churches

The Holy Father has appointed Msgr. Erwin Aserios Balagapo and Msgr. Han (Agostino) Hyuntaek, until now officials of the Dicastery for Evangelization, as office heads of the Section for first evangelization and the new particular Churches of the same Dicastery.

 

Appointment of auxiliary bishops of Los Angeles, U.S.A.

The Holy Father has appointed the following as auxiliary bishops of the archdiocese of Los Angeles, United States of America: Msgr. Albert Bahhuth, of the clergy of the same archdiocese, until now parish priest of the Holy Family in South Pasadena, assigning him the titular see of Vadesi; the Reverend Fr. Matthew Elshoff, O.F.M. Cap., member of the Western America Province of the Friars Minor Capuchin, until now parish priest of Saint Lawrence of Brindisi in Los Angeles, assigning him the titular see of Lamzella; Msgr. Brian Nunes, of the clergy of the same archdiocese, until now vicar general, assigning him the titular see of Kearney; and the Reverend Slawomir Szkredka, of the clergy of the same archdiocese, until now professor at Saint John’s Seminary in Camarillo, assigning him the titular see of Vicus Turris.

 

Curriculum vitae of Msgr. Albert Bahhuth

Msgr. Albert Bahhuth was born on 6 October 1956 in Beirut, Lebanon. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Missouri University of Science and Technology and then a doctorate from the University of Mississippi in Oxford. After a few years of work, he carried out his ecclesiastical studies at Saint John’s Seminary in Camarillo, obtaining a Master of Divinity.

He was ordained a priest for the archdiocese of Los Angeles on 1 June 1996.

He has held the following offices: parish vicar of Saint Gregory the Great in Whittier (1996-2000) and Holy Family in Glendale (2000-2002); parish priest of Saint Finbar in Burbank (2002-2013) and Saint Kateri Tekakwitha in Santa Clarita (2013-2015); vicar general (2015-2020); and parish priest of Holy Family in South Pasadena (since 2021).

 

Curriculum vitae of Msgr. Matthew G. Elshoff, O.F.M. Cap.

Msgr. Matthew Elshoff, O.F.M. Cap., was born on 24 September 1955 in Cincinnati, in the archdiocese of the same name. He entered the community of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin, giving his perpetual vows on 22 September 1979. He carried out his studies in philosophy at Saint Albert’s Priory in Oakland, and in theology at the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology in Berkeley, obtaining a Master of Divinity. He subsequently obtained a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy at the California Family Study Center in Hollywood.

He was ordained a priest on 18 June 1982 for the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin.

He has held the following offices: vocational director (1982-2985); chaplain at the Saint Francis High School in La Cañada Flintridge (1985-1989); assistant master of novices (1989); alumni director (1992); president of Saint Francis High School (1993-2008); provincial minister (2008-2014); parish priest of the Old Mission Santa Ines in Solvang (2015-2018) and of Saint Lawrence of Brindisi in Los Angeles (since 2018).

 

Curriculum vitae of Msgr. Brian Nunes

Msgr. Brian Nunes was born on 26 October 1964 in Los Angeles, in the archdiocese of the same name. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in communication from Loyola Marymount University, and a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and a Master of Divinity from Saint John’s Seminary in Camarillo.

He was ordained a priest on 31 May 2008 for the archdiocese of Los Angeles.

He has held the following offices: parish vicar (2008-2012) and then administrator (2012-2014) of the Saint Mary Star of the Sea parish in San Pedro; administrator of Saint Gregory the Great in Whittier (2014-2015); special secretary to the archbishop (2015-2019); vice-chancellor (2018-2020); and vicar general (since 2020).

 

Curriculum vitae of Msgr. Slawomir Szkredka

Msgr. Slawomir Szkredka was born on 12 may 1974 in Czechowice, Poland. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and a Master of Divinity from the Saints Cyril and Methodius Seminary in Orchard Lake. He subsequently obtained a licentiate and a doctorate in sacred scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute.

He was ordained a priest on 12 January 2002 for the archdiocese of Los Angeles.

After ordination, he first served as parish vicar of Saint Genevieve in Panorama City (2002-2006) and of Saint John the Baptist in Baldwin Park (2006-2008). He carried out his doctoral studies in Rome (2008-2015) and went on to hold the roles of formator and professor at Saint John’s Seminary in Camarillo (since 2015).
