Resignation and appointment of bishop of Port-Louis, Mauritius

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the diocese of Port-Louis, Mauritius, presented by His Eminence Cardinal Maurice Piat, C.S.Sp.

The Holy Father has appointed the Reverend Jean Michaël Durhône, of the clergy of Port-Louis, until now secretary of the Episcopal Conference of the Indian Ocean, as bishop of the same diocese.

Curriculum vitae

Msgr. Jean Michaël Durhône was born on 5 June 1973 in Vacoas-Phoenix, in the diocese of Port-Louis, Mauritius. After completing his studies in philosophy and theology at the Seminary des Pays-de-la-Loire in Nantes, France, he was ordained a priest on 7 August 2005 for the diocese of Port-Louis.

Following ordination, he first served as vicar of the Saint-Louis Cathedral, Port-Louis (2005-2010) and diocesan chaplain of the Young Christian Workers’ Movement (2006-2010. He was awarded a licentiate in moral and pastoral theology and catechesis from the Centre International de Formation en Catéchèse et Pastoral «Lumen Vitae» in Namur, Belgium (2010-2012). He went on to hold the roles of diocesan head of catechesis (since 2012); parish vicar of Sainte-Hélène, Curepipe, (2012-2015) and of Saint-Sauveur, Bambous (2015-2020); parish priest of Notre Dame de la Visitation, Vacoas-Phoenix (2015); since 2019, secretary of the Episcopal Conference, and since 2021, diocesan head of youth pastoral care.

 

Appointment of bishop of Bragança-Miranda, Portugal

The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Nuno Manuel dos Santos Almeida as bishop of the diocese of Bragança-Miranda, Portugal, transferring him from the titular see of Ruspe and the office of auxiliary of the archdiocese of Braga.

Curriculum vitae

Bishop Nuno Manuel dos Santos Almeida was born on 1 August 1962 in Pedrosinhas, in the diocese of Viseu. After attending the major seminary of Viseu, he was awarded a licentiate in theology from the Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Porto and a doctorate from the Salesian Pontifical University of Rome.

He was ordained a priest on 19 October 1986, and incardinated in the diocese of Viseu.

He has served as parish priest in various parishes, president of the Priestly Fraternity of Viseu, and member of the College of Consultors and the Presbyteral Council.

On 21 November 2015 he was appointed titular bishop of Ruspe and auxiliary of Braga, receiving episcopal ordination on 31 January 2016.

Within the Portuguese Episcopal Conference, he is a member of the Vocations and Ministries Commission and the Laity and Family Commission.

 

Appointment of bishop of San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina

The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Juan Carlos Ares, until now titular of Cercina and auxiliary of the archdiocese of Buenos Aires, as bishop of the diocese of San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina.

Bishop Juan Carlos Ares was born on 23 December 1963 in Buenos Aires; he was ordained a priest for the same archdiocese on 25 November 1989. He was parish vicar and parish priest of San Rafael, chaplain of the scouts for the Devoto Episcopal Vicariate, member of the Presbyteral Council and College of Consultors, deputy director of the Departamento de Escuelas of the archdiocese of Buenos Aires, member of the Catholic Education Council and parish priest of San Ramón Nonato and Nuestra Señora de Balvanera. On 17 November 2014, he was appointed titular bishop of Cercina and auxiliary bishop of Buenos Aires, receiving episcopal ordination on the following 26 December. Within the Episcopal Conference he is president for Prison Pastoral Care, while in the archdiocese of Buenos Aires he is episcopal vicar of the Devoto Vicariate.

 

Appointment of auxiliary bishop of the diocese of Morondava, Madagascar

The Holy Father has appointed the Reverend Jean Nicolas Rakotojaona, of the clergy of Antananarivo, until now rector of the Saint Paul Apôtre Philosophy Major Seminary in Antsirabe, as auxiliary bishop of the diocese of Morondava, Madagascar, assigning him the titular see of Dragonara.

Msgr. Jean Nicolas Rakotojaona was born on 18 January 1973 in Anosy Avaratra, Antananarivo. He entered the Saint Paul Apôtre Major Seminary and continued his studies in theology at the Saint Thérèse de l’Enfant Jésus Major Seminary. He was ordained a priest on 3 August 2002 for the clergy of Antananarivo.

After ordination, he was parish vicar in the distrinct of Ihazolava (2002-2004). He studied for a master’s degree in philosophy of religion at the Université Catholique de Madagascar, and went on to serve as vicar in Andohatapenaka and Ampefiloha (2004-2006), rector of the Victoire Rasoamanarivo Preparatory Seminary, teacher of social doctrine of the Church at the Higher Institute of Technology of Antananarivo, and of philosophy in the minor seminary (2006-2009), and parish priest of Ambanidia (2009-2011). He was awarded a doctorate in theology from the Université de Fribourg, Switzerland (2011-2017). He was vice-rector (2017-2018) and, since 2018, rector, of the Saint Paul Apôtre Major Seminary.
