Resignation and appointment of bishop of Harrisburg, U.S.A.

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the diocese of Harrisburg, United States of America, presented by Bishop Ronald W. Gainer.

The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Timothy C. Senior, until now titular bishop of Floriana and auxiliary of Philadelphia.

Curriculum vitae

Bishop Timothy C. Senior was born on 22 March 1960 in Philadelphia, in the archdiocese of the same name. He attended the Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary in Overbrook, Pennsylvania, where he was awarded a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in theology.

He received priestly ordination on 18 Mary 1985, and was incardinated in the archdiocese of Philadelphia.

After ordination, he first held the offices of parish vicar of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary parish in Feasterville (1985-1988); adjunct director of the Office for Youth Pastoral Care (1987-1988); and teacher at Archbishop Kennedy High School (1988-1989). He then obtained a master’s degree in administration and social work at Boston College (1992). He went on to serve as deputy secretary (1992-1997) and archdiocesan secretary (1997-2004) of Catholic Human Services, and vicar for the clergy (2004-2009).

He was appointed titular bishop of Floriana and auxiliary of Philadelphia on 8 June 2009, and received episcopal consecration the following 31 July.

As auxiliary of Philadelphia, he was vicar general and moderator of the Curia (2009-2012), rector (2012-2022), and chancellor (since 2022) of Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary, and episcopal vicar of Montgomery County and South Philadelphia.

 

Appointment of metropolitan archbishop of Zamboanga, Philippines

The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Julius Sullan Tonel as metropolitan archbishop of Zamboanga, Philippines, transferring him from the diocese of Ipil.

Curriculum vitae

Archbishop-elect Julius Sullan Tonel was born in Davao City, Philippines, on 31 August 1956. He attended the seminary in Davao and Manila, and was ordained a priest for the archdiocese of Davao on 12 April 1980.

He first served as parish vicar and director of the Family Apostolate, and subsequently studied for a licentiate in liturgical theology at the Pontifical Saint Anselm Athenaeum in Rome (1986-1990). He went on to serve as director of the Archdiocesan Liturgical Centre and vice rector, professor, and spiritual director of the Major Regional Seminary of Davao (1992-1997), of which he became rector in 1997.

From 2002 to 2007 he was parish priest and vicar general of the archdiocese of Davao.

On 30 June 2007 he was elected bishop-prelate of Ipil, and was consecrated the following 20 August. He then became ordinary of the same circumscription with the erection of the new diocese in 2010.

Within the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, he chairs the Episcopal Commission for Healthcare.

 

Appointment of under-secretary of the Dicastery for Evangelization, Section for first evangelization and the new particular Churches

The Holy Father has appointed Msgr. Samuele Sangalli, until now official of the Dicastery for Bishops, as under-secretary of the Dicastery for Evangelization, Section for first evangelization and the new particular Churches.

Curriculum vitae

Msgr. Sangalli was born in Lecco, Italy, on 10 September 1967 and was ordained a priest on 8 June 1996 for the archdiocese of Milan. He was awarded a degree in educational sciences from the University of Rome Tre, a doctorate in philosophy from the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome, and a licentiate in spiritual theology from the Pontifical Theological University and Pontifical Institute of Spirituality “Teresianum”, Rome. He is an official of the Dicastery for Bishops and professor at the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali Guido Carli (LUISS), Rome.
