Appointment of bishop of São Carlos, Brazil

The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Luiz Carlos Dias as bishop of the diocese of São Carlos, Brazil, transferring him from the titular see of Tunes and from the office of auxiliary of the metropolitan archdiocese of São Paulo.

Curriculum vitae

Bishop Luiz Carlos Dias was born on 16 September 1964 in Caconde, diocese of São João da Boa Vista, in the State of São Paulo. He carried out his studies in philosophy (1984-1986) and theology (1987-1990) at the Centro de Estudos da Arquidiocese de Ribeirão Preto (CEARP). He was awarded a licentiate in philosophy from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome (2002-2004).

He received priestly ordination on 5 April 1991 and was incardinated in the diocese of São João da Boa Vista, where he held the following offices: rector of the preparatory seminary; parish vicar of the Imaculada Conceição in Caconde; parish priest of Nossa Senhora de Fátima in São João da Boa Vista; director of the Institute of Philosophy; rector of the São João Maria Vianney Seminary of Theology and parish vicar of São Judas Tadeu  in Mogi Guaçu; coordinator of missionary pastoral care and member of the presbyteral council. In addition, he has served as professor at the Institutes of Philosophy of the dioceses of São João da Boa Vista and Guaxupé, and of the metropolitan archdiocese of Brasília.

From 2010 to 2015 he served as executive secretary of the Campanha da Fraternidade and of the Campanha da Evangelização of the Brazilian Episcopal Conference.

On 16 March 2016 he was appointed as titular bishop of Tunes and auxiliary of the metropolitan archdiocese of São Paulo, and received episcopal ordination the following 7 May. He has been episcopal vicar for the Belém region until now.

Within the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil he is secretary for the Sul 1 Region.
