Appointment of bishop of Nicopoli, Bulgaria

The Holy Father has appointed as bishop of the diocese of Nicopoli, Bulgaria, the Reverend Msgr. Strahil Veselinov Kavalenov, until now apostolic administrator sede vacante of the same circumscription.

Curriculum vitae

Msgr. Strahil Veselinov Kavalenov was born on 25 March 1966 in Razgrad, Bulgaria. After his high school studies, he graduated in history from the St. Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia. He taught history in various higher institutes in the capital. He received his formation at the Lugano Faculty of Theology, Switzerland, the Pontifical Saint John II University in Krakow, Poland, and the Pontifical Lateran University, residing during the last period at the Russicum College in Rome.

On 18 April 2009 he was ordained a priest for the diocese of Nicopoli and was appointed as parish priest of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Rosary parish in Veliko Tarnovo, until 2012, the year in which he transferred as parish priest of the Blessed Bishop Martyr Eugene Bossilkov parish in Gabrovo.

On 1 March 2018 he was appointed as vicar general of the diocese of Nicopoli and on 15 September 2020, apostolic administrator sede vacante.

 

Appointment of member of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences

The Holy Father appointed Professor Jutta Allmendinger, president of the WZB Berlin Social Science Center, as member of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences.

Curriculum vitae

Professor Jutta Allmendinger was born in Mannheim, Germany, on 26 September 1956. She obtained a first level degree in sociology and social psychology at the University of Mannheim, the subsequent level at the University of Wisconsin in the United States of America, and concluded her specialization and doctorate at Harvard University, United States of America. Between 1992 and 2007 she taught at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, Germany. From 1999 to 2002 she was chairperson of the German Sociological Association, and from 2003 to 2007, she held the role of director of the Institute for Employment Research in Nuremburg.

Since 2007 she has served as lecturer in sociology of education and research on the job market at the Humboldt-Universität in Berlin and, at the same time, as president of the WZB Berlin Social Science Center. In addition, since 2012 she has been honorary professor of sociology at the Freie Universität of Berlin.

She is the author of numerous texts. She has received several honours including the First Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, in 2012, and a doctorate honoris causa from the University of Tampere, Finland, in 2014.
