Resignation of bishop of the Canary Islands, Spain, and appointment of successor

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the diocese of the Canary Islands, Spain, presented by Bishop Francisco Cases Andreu.

The Pope has appointed Bishop José Mazuelos Pérez of Jerez de la Frontera as bishop of the diocese of the Canary Islands.

Bishop José Mazuelos Pérez

Bishop José Mazuelos Pérez was born in Osuna, archdiocese of Seville, on 9 October 1960. He obtained a licentiate in medicine from the University of Seville, and exercised the medical profession for a while. He entered the seminary of Seville and received priestly ordination in the same archdiocese on 17 March 1990. He was awarded a doctorate in moral theology at the Alphonsianum Academy, Rome.

He has served as parish priest, sub-director of the Religious Assistance Service of the University of Seville and professor in the Centro de Estudios Teológicos of Seville.

On 19 March 2009 he was elected as bishop of Jerez de la Frontera and consecrated the following 6 June.

In the Spanish episcopal conference he has served as president of the Episcopal Sub-Commission for the Family and the defence of Life since 2020, and has been a member of the Episcopal Commission for the Lay Apostolate since 2009.
