Resignation of bishop of Huelva, Spain, and appointment of successor

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the diocese of Huelva, Spain, presented by Bishop José Vilaplana Blasco.

The Pope has appointed Bishop Santiago Gómez Sierra as bishop of the diocese of Huelva, transferring him from the titular see of Vergi and the office of auxiliary of Seville.

Bishop Santiago Gómez Sierra

Bishop Santiago Gómez Sierra was born in Madridejos, archdiocese of Toledo, on 24 November 1957. He was ordained a priest on 18 September 1982, and was incardinated in the diocese of Córdoba. He was awarded a licentiate in philosophy and science of communication by the Complutense University of Madrid, and a licentiate in theology from the Pontifical University of Comillas in Madrid.

He has served as professor, formator and vice-rector of the major seminary of Córdoba; official for pastoral care of vocations; parish priest; president of the Executive Commission of the Opera Pia Santísima Trinidad in Córdoba, vicar general; and president of the Board of Caja Sur. On 18 December he was appointed titular bishop of Vergi and auxiliary of Seville, and received episcopal ordination on 26 February 2011.

Within the Episcopal Conference he is a member of the Episcopal Commission for Evangelisation, Catechesis and the Catechumenate.

 

Appointment of bishop of Salto, Uruguay

The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Arturo Eduardo Fajardo Bustamante of San José de Mayo as bishop of Salto, Uruguay.

Bishop Arturo Eduardo Fajardo Bustamante was born in Aiguá, in the then-diocese of Minas, on 17 July 1961. He attended a military high school, then courses in philosophy and theology at the major seminary of Montevideo. He was ordained a priest by John Paul II during his visit to Uruguay on 8 May 1988, and incardinated in Minas.

He has served as parish priest, member of the college of consultors, diocesan supervisor for youth pastoral ministry, and spiritual director for major seminarians. In 2005 he became rector of the Cristo Rey interdiocesan major seminary of Montevideo. On 27 June 2007, he was elected bishop of San José de Mayo, receiving episcopal ordination on the following 8 September.

He is currently president of the Episcopal Conference of Uruguay.

 

Appointment of bishop of Caxito, Angola

The Holy Father has appointed as bishop of the diocese of Caxito, Angola, the Reverend Fr. Maurício Agostinho Camuto, C.S.Sp., currently director of the Radio Ecclesia National Catholic Radio.

Reverend Fr. Maurício Agostinho Camuto, C.S.Sp.

Reverend Fr. Maurício Agostinho Camuto, C.S.Sp., was born on 26 December 1963 in Colungo Alto, diocese of Ndalatando, province of Kwanza Norte. He carried out his studies in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo, and gave his religious vows on 5 September 1987 in the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (Spiritans).

He was ordained a priest on 28 July 1991.

After priestly ordination he gained pastoral experience in the Mission of Landana, diocese of Cabinda, in Angola (1991-1995), and then served as rector of the preparatory seminary of the Spiritan Fathers in the diocese of Malanje (1995-1999), and rector of the Scholasticate of the Spiritan Fathers in the dioceses of Huambo and Benguela (1999-2000). From 2000 to 2003 he carried out his studies in social communication at the Pontifical Salesian University, Rome; he then served as coordinator of the Commission for Communications Media of the Episcopal Conference  (CEAST) (2003-2006); director of the Radio Ecclesia National Catholic Radio (2006-2010); provincial superior of the Spartan Fathers in Angola for two terms (2010-2016); and since 2016, director of the Radio Ecclesia National Catholic Radio.

 

Appointment of secretary of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See

The Holy Father has appointed the distinguished Dr. Fabio Gasperini as secretary of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See.

Dr. Fabio Gasperini

Born in Rome on 17 October 1961, Dr. Fabio Gasperini is an auditor and chartered accountant, and has a degree in economics and commerce. He has more than 25 years of experience in consulting and auditing services at leading financial institutions: banks, insurance companies, asset management companies, securities brokerage firms and financial companies.

He is currently chairman of the Board of Directors of EY Advisor S.p.A.; member of the EMEIA Executive Advisory Service Committee and of AIIA (Italian Association of Internal Auditors); European Head of the Banking and Capital Market sector and Italian Head of Advisory Services for the financial sector.
