Resignation of metropolitan archbishop of Saint Louis, U.S.A., and appointment of new metropolitan archbishop

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the metropolitan archdiocese of Saint Louis, United States of America, presented by Archbishop Robert J. Carlson.

The Pope appointed Bishop Mitchell T. Rozanski of Springfield in Massachusetts as metropolitan archbishop of Saint Louis, United States of America.

Archbishop-elect Mitchell T. Rozanski

Archbishop-elect Mitchell T. Rozanski was born on 6 August 1958 in Baltimore, Maryland, in the archdiocese of the same name. He attended the Sacred Heart of Mary Elementary School in Baltimore, and the Our Lady of Mount Carmel High School in Essex. He carried out his studies in philosophy and theology at the Theological College of the Catholic University of America in Washington (1978-1984).

He was ordained a priest for the archdiocese of Baltimore on 24 November 1984.

Since priestly ordination he has held the following offices: parish vicar of the Saint Michael parish in Overlea (1984-1986), and of the Saint Anthony of Padua parish in Baltimore (1986-1990); parish priest of the Saint Isaac Jogues parish in Baltimore (1990-1993) and of the twin parishes of Holy Cross and Saint Mary Star of the Sea in Baltimore (1993-2000). He was also vicar forage in Anne Arundel County and member of the college of consultors, the presbyteral council, the archdiocese Committee for Vocations, the Priest Personnel Board, the Committee for the Permanent Formation of the Clergy, and the Committee for the Formation of the Laity. He has also served as vicar for Hispanic ministers in Baltimore.

He was appointed as titular bishop of Walla Walla and auxiliary of Baltimore on 3 July 2004, and was consecrated the following 24 August.

He was transferred to the see of Springfield in Massachusetts on 19 June 2014, and assumed office on 12 August 2014.

Within the Episcopal Conference he is a member of the Committee on Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs.

 

Resignation of bishop of Sete Lagoas, Brazil, and appointment of successor

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the diocese of Sete Lagoas, Brazil, presented by Bishop Aloísio Jorge Pena Vitral.

The Pope has appointed as bishop of the diocese of Sete Lagoas, Brazil, Bishop Francisco Cota de Oliveira, transferring him from the titular see of Fiorentino and the office of auxiliary of Curitiba.

Bishop Francisco Cota de Oliveira

Bishop Francisco Cota de Oliveira was born on 5 August 1969 in Onça do Pitangui, diocese of Divinópolis, in the State of Minas Gerais. He carried out his studies in philosophy at the Pontifical Catholic University in Belo Horizonte (1992-1994) and in theology at the Dom João Rezende Costa Institute of the archdiocese of Belo Horizonte (1995-1998).

On 1 August 1999 he was ordained a priest and incardinated in the diocese of Divinópolis, where he held the following offices: parish priest of Nossa Senhora do Carmo in Carmo do Cajuru-MG, of Sant’Ana in Itaúna-MG and of Nossa Senhora do Pilar in Pitangui-MG; diocesan counsellor for youth; professor in the preparatory seminary, in the seminary of philosophy and in the theology course for the laity; vicar forane; promoter of Justice of the diocesan ecclesiastical tribunal; member of the Diocesan Council for Economic Affairs, and deputy diocesan bursar.

On 7 June 2017 he was appointed titular bishop of Fiorentino and auxiliary of Curitiba, and received episcopal ordination the following 26 August.

Within the Brazilian Episcopal Conference he is a member of the Episcopal Pastoral Commission for Social and Transformative Action.

 

Appointment of auxiliary of Baltimore, U.S.A.

The Holy Father has appointed as auxiliary bishop of the archdiocese of Baltimore, United States of America, the Reverend Fr. Bruce Lewandowski, C.Ss.R., member of the province of Baltimore of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, currently ad interim delegate for Hispanic Ministry of the archdiocese of Baltimore and parish priest of the Sacred Heart of Jesus / Sagrado Corazon de Jesus parish in Highlandtown, Maryland, assigning him the titular see of Croe.

Reverend Fr. Bruce Lewandowski, C.Ss.R.

The Reverend Fr. Bruce Lewandowski, C.Ss.R., was born on 8 June 1967 in Toledo, Ohio, in the diocese of the same name. On 10 September 1988 he gave his first vows as a Redemptorist for the province of Baltimore. He attended the Saint Alphonsus College in Suffield, Connecticut, and the Holy Redeemer College in Washington, carrying out his theological studies at the Washington Theological Union (1988-1994).

He was ordained a priest on 7 May 1994 in the Basilica Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C.

He has held the following offices as religious priest: parish vicar of the Saint Cecilia parish in Manhattan, New York (1994-1996) and of the Immaculate Conception parish in the Bronx (1996-1998); missionary service in Seelos House, Vieux Fort, Saint Lucia, West Indies (1998-2000); pastor of the Saint Boniface parish in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (2000-2006), of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary parish in Kensington, Pennsylvania (2006-2011) and of the Sacred Heart of Jesus/Sagrado Corazon de Jesus parish in Baltimore (since 2016); vicar for Cultural Ministries of the archdiocese of Philadelphia (2011-2015) and ad interim delegate for Hispanic Ministry of the archdiocese of Baltimore (since 2019).
