Appointment of ordinary member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences

The Holy Father has appointed as ordinary member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences the Distinguished Professor Eric Steven Lander, president and founding director of the Broad Institute of Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard, Cambridge, United States of America.

Professor Eric Steven Lander

Professor Eric Steven Lander was born in New York (USA) on 3 February 1957. He graduated from Princeton University in 1978 and received his doctorate from Oxford University as Rhodes Scholar in 1981.

Geneticist, molecular biologist and mathematician has played a pioneering role in the definition, understanding and biomedical application of the human genome.

He is president and founding director of the Broad Institute of Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard (MIT), Cambridge, United States of America. In addition, he teaches biology at MIT and systems biology at Harvard Medical School.

He has received numerous national and international awards.
