Resignation of bishop of Guarapuava, Brazil, and appointment of successor

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the diocese of Guarapuava, Brazil, presented by Bishop Antônio Wagner da Silva, S.C.I.

The Pope has appointed as bishop of the diocese of Guarapuava, Brazil, Bishop Amilton Manoel da Silva, C.P., transferring him from the titular see of Tusuro and the office of auxiliary of the archdiocese of Curitiba.

Bishop Amilton Manoel da Silva, C.P.

Bishop Amilton Manoel da Silva, C.P., was born on 2 March 1963 in Osvaldo Cruz, in the diocese of Marília, State of São Paulo. He completed his studies in philosophy at the Federal University of Paraná in Curitiba (1992-1995) and in theology at the São Paulo-ITESP Institute of Theology (1997-2000). He give his religious vows on 18 January 1997 as a member of the Congregation of the Passion of Jesus Christ (Passionists) and received priestly ordination on 17 December 2000.

Within his Congregation he has held the following roles: formator of postulants; master of novices; coordinator of the spirituality team of the Province of Calvary and the Passionist Family of Brazil; coordinator of the formation team for various countries of America; member of the team of the General Council for Formation; provincial counsellor; provincial superior of the Passionist Province of Calvary with headquarters in São Paulo. In addition, he was counsellor of the Conference of Religious of Brazil (Regional of Paraná), parish vicar in Colombo-PR and Ponta Grossa-PR, and pastor of São Paulo da Cruz in the archdiocese of São Paulo.

On 7 June 2017 he was appointed as titular bishop of Tusuro and auxiliary of Curitiba, and received episcopal ordination the following 19 August. Within the Brazilian Episcopal Conference he is a member of the Episcopal Commission for Youth and secretary of Region Sul 2, which includes the ecclesiastical circumscriptions of the State of Paraná.

 

Appointment of bishop of Nova Friburgo, Brazil

The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Luiz Antônio Lopes Ricci as bishop of the diocese of Nova Friburgo, Brazil, transferring him from the titular see of Tindari and the office of auxiliary of the archdiocese of Niterói.

Bishop Luiz Antônio Lopes Ricci

Bishop Luiz Antônio Lopes Ricci was born on 16 May 1966 in Bauru, in the diocese of the same name, in the State of São Paulo. He completed his ecclesiastical studies in Marília, studying philosophy at the Sagrado Coração de Jesus Provincial Seminary (1991-1993) and theology at the Rainha dos Apóstolos Theological Institute (1994-1997). He was then awarded a licentiate (1997-1999) and a doctorate (2004-2007) in moral theology at the Alphonsian Academy of Rome. He also attended a post-doctoral course in bioethics at the São Camilo University Center in São Paulo (2013-2014).

On July 10, 1997 he was ordained a priest and incardinated in the diocese of Bauru, where he held the following positions: vice rector and then rector of the seminary of the province of Botucatu with headquarters in Marília-SP; parish administrator of Senhor Bom Jesus do Mirante in Cabrália Paulista-SP and of Santa Maria in Piratininga-SP; parish priest of São Cristóvão in Bauru; spiritual assistant of the Movement Encontro de Casais com Cristo; diocesan pastoral coordinator; vicar general; member of the Presbyteral Council and of the College of Consultors. In addition, he was professor and director of the Faculty João Paulo II (FAJOPA) of the ecclesiastical province of Botucatu based in Marília.

On May 10, 2017 he was appointed titular bishop of Tindari and auxiliary of the archdiocese of Niterói, receiving episcopal ordination the following 16 July.

Within the Brazilian Episcopal Conference he is a member of the Episcopal Commission for the Doctrine of the Faith.

 

Appointment of bishop of Pembroke, Canada

The Holy Father has appointed as bishop of the diocese of Pembroke, Canada, Bishop Guy Desrochers, C.Ss.R., transferring him from the titular see of Melzi and the office of auxiliary of Alexandria-Cornwall, Canada.

Bishop Guy Desrochers, C.Ss.R.

H.E. Mgr. Guy Desrochers, C.Ss.R., was born on 23 May 1956 in Hull, Quebec, in the current archdiocese of Gatineau. He completed his secondary studies at the Collège Saint-Alexandre des Pères du Saint-Esprit in Limbour and obtained his specialisation in fine arts and commercial arts at the Algonquin College in Ottawa. From 1972 to 1979 he was “caricaturist” for the newspaper Le Droit in Ottawa. In August 1983 he entered the novitiate of the Redemptorist Fathers in Sainte-Anne-de Baupré. He made his temporary profession on 7 August 1984 and took his perpetual vows on 29 August 1987.

In the years 1982-1983 he studied philosophy at the Saint-Augustin de Cap-Rouge Seminary in Québec and theology from 1984 to 1989 at Laval University, obtaining a  bachelor’s degree. He then did a two-year internship in the archdiocese of Montreal. On 7 January 1989 he was ordained a priest in Hull in the Redemptorist Province of Saint-Anne-de-Beaupré.

From 1989 to 1995 he was in charge of a missionary team composed of four Redemptorists in the diocese of Gaspé. From 1995 to 1998 he was superior of Aylmer in the diocese of Gatineau-Hull. During the years 1998-2005 he exercised his ministry at the Shrine of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré also as house treasurer.

From 2005 until 2008 he was appointed Superior of the Saint-Redempteur Pavilion of Saint-Augustin-Des-Desmaures, a retreat house for ecclesial groups. From 2008 to 2011, he was Director of the Revue Sainte-Anne and animator of the Shrine itself. From 2011 until 2015, he was appointed Rector of the Sanctuary of Sainte-Anne and Superior of the International Community that provides spiritual service at the Sanctuary. From 2015 to 2018, he was also Preacher of Retreats in Canada and the United States.

On 12 December 2018, he was named titular bishop of Melzi and auxiliary of Alexandria-Cornwall, and was consecrated on 19 March 2019.

 

Merging of the archdiocese of Ottawa and the diocese of Alexandria-Cornwall, Canada, and appointment of archbishop and coadjutor the new ecclesiastical circumscription of Ottawa-Cornwall

The Holy Father has ordered the merging of the archdiocese of Ottawa and the diocese of Alexandria-Cornwall, Canada, and appointed Archbishop Terrence Prendergast, S.J., as archbishop of the new ecclesiastical circumscription of Ottawa-Cornwall.

In addition, the Holy Father has appointed Bishop Marcel Damphousse of Sault Sainte Marie as archbishop coadjutor of the archdiocese of Ottawa-Cornwall.

Archbishop-elect Marcel Damphousse

Archbishop-elect Marcel Damphousse was born on 19 March 1963 in Saint-Joseph, Manitoba. After his primary studies he attended psychology courses at the Saint-Boniface University College. In 1988 he enrolled at Saint Paul University in Ottawa for courses in theology.

He was ordained a priest on 28 June 1991 and incardinated in the archdiocese of Saint-Boniface.

After ordination he carried out his pastoral ministry in various parishes as parish vicar, and from 1994 to 2000 as parish priest of Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité in Somerset. At the same time he was appointed president of the Diocesan Commission for Vocations. In 1996 he also became parish priest of Saint-Léon.

From 2000 to 2002 he studied in Rome, where he obtained his licentiate in spiritual theology at the Teresianum Institute. When he returned to the diocese he carried out his ministry as pastor and in the five-year period 2003-2008 he again served as diocesan director for vocations and chaplain of Saint Boniface High School. In 2008 he was appointed as rector of Saint Boniface Cathedral Basilica and member of the diocesan council for economic affairs.

Appointed bishop of Alexandria-Cornwall on 16 June 2012, he was consecrated the following 2 September. He was then transferred to the diocese of Sault Sainte Marie on 12 November 2015.

He is one of the two counsellors of the executive office of the Assembly of Catholic Bishops of Ontario, and member of the Commission for Education.
