Appointment of bishop of Alexandria, U.S.A.

The Holy Father has appointed as bishop of Alexandria, United States of America, Msgr. Robert W. Marshall, of the clergy of the diocese of Memphis, currently vicar general and parish priest of the cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the same diocese (Tennessee).

Bishop-elect Robert W. Marshall

Bishop-elect Robert W. Marshall was born on 17 June 1959 in Memphis, in the diocese of the same name, in Tennessee. He attended the Saint Michael School in Memphis (1964-1973), and the Christian Brothers High School in Memphis (1973-1977). He obtained a bachelor’s degree in history from the Christian Brothers University in Memphis (1977-1980) and a doctorate in law from the University of Memphis: Humphrey’s School of Law (1980-1983). For several years he worked as a lawyer. He entered the seminary and carried out his ecclesiastical studies at the Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans (1995-2000).

He was ordained a priest for the diocese of Memphis on 10 June 2000.

Since priestly ordination, he has held the following offices: parish vicar of the Incarnation parish in Collierville (2000-2002); parish priest of the Sacred Heart parish in Humboldt and of the Saint Matthew parish in Milan (2002-2004), and of the Ascension parish in Memphis (2004-2012); of the Saint Francis of Assisi parish in Cordova (2012-2017); administrator and subsequently parish priest of the cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Memphis (since 2017); episcopal master of ceremonies and delegate to the apostolic administrator (2018-2019). He has served as vicar general since 2019, and is member of the college of consultors, of the presbyteral council, and of the Clergy Personnel Board.
