Appointment of bishop of Arauca, Colombia

The Holy Father has appointed as bishop of Arauca, Colombia, Bishop Jaime Cristóbal Abril González, currently titular of Putia in Byzacena and auxiliary of the archdiocese of Nueva Pamplona, Colombia.

Bishop Jaime Cristóbal Abril González was born in El Espino, diocese of Málaga-Soatá, on 17 July 1972. He carried out his studies in philosophy and theology at the major seminary of Tunja. He was awarded a licentiate in liturgy from the Pontifical Saint Anselm Athenaeum in Rome.

He received priestly ordination on 10 February 1996 and was incardinated in the archdiocese of Tunja.

He has since held the following positions: parish vicar of the parish of “San Miguel Arcángel” in Paipa, chaplain and professor of “Armando Solano” College in Tunja, parish administrator of the “El Divino Niño” parish in El Manzano, parish administrator of the “Santa Rita” parish in Suit, parish administrator of the “María Auxiliadora” parish in Tunja, formator of the major seminary and archdiocesan promoter of vocations, director of the department of liturgy of the Colombian Episcopal Conference and parish priest of the Cathedral.

On April 16, 2016 he was appointed as titular bishop of Putia in Byzacena and auxiliary of the archdiocese of Nueva Pamplona, Colombia. He received episcopal consecration on 4 June 2016. Since 6 June 2018 he has been the diocesan administrator of the same archdiocese.
