The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the archdiocese of Bordeaux, France, presented by His Eminence Cardinal Jean-Pierre Ricard.

The Holy Father has appointed as bishop-prelate of Trondheim, Norway, the Reverend Fr. Erik Varden, O.C.S.O., currently abbot of Mount Saint Bernard in Leicestershire, England.

Reverend Fr. Erik Varden, O.C.S.O.

The Reverend Fr. Erik Varden, O.C.S.O., was born on 13 May 1974 in Sarpsborg in Norway, diocese of Oslo.

He carried out his philosophical and theological studies in Cambridge, obtaining a doctorate in theology, and at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome, where he was awarded a licentiate in oriental ecclesiastical sciences.

He entered the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance in 2002, and gave his religious vows in the Abbey of Mount Saint Bernard in Leicestershire, England on 6 October 2007.

On 16 July 2011 he was ordained a priest.

He subsequently taught at the Pontifical Saint Anselm Athenaeum in Rome, working at the same time for the Scandinavian section of Vatican Radio.

He then returned to the Abbey of Mount Saint Bernard, assuming the responsibility of Superior ad nutum (from 2013).

In 2015 he was elected Abbot of Mount Saint Bernard.

The Holy Father has appointed Archbishop Bernardito C. Auza, titular of Suacia and currently Holy See Permanent Observer at the United Nations Organization in New York, as apostolic nuncio in Spain and in the Principality of Andorra.
