Appointment of bishop of Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil

The Holy Father Francis has appointed as bishop of Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, H.E. Msgr. Sérgio de Deus Borges, transferring him from the titular see of Gergi and from the office of auxiliary bishop of São Paulo.

H.E. Msgr. Sérgio de Deus Borges was born on 4 April 1966 in Alfredo Wagner, in the diocese of Rio do Sul, in the State of Santa Catarina. He carried out his studies in philosophy with the Capuchin Friars in Ponta Grossa-PR and in theology at the Paulo VI Institute of Theology in Londrina-PR. He obtained a licentiate in canon law from the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome, and a doctorate from the Argentine Catholic University. He specialized in marriage and family at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome. In addition, he attended a course in pedagogy at the Lutheran University of Brazil.

On 6 February 1993 he received priestly ordination, and was incardinated in the diocese of Cornélio Procópio, where he held the following offices: parish priest of São Miguel and São Francisco in Cornélio Procópio; parish administrator and later parish priest of Nossa Senhora da Conceição in Jataizinho; rector and professor of the São José Major Seminary; professor at the Menino Deus Seminary; member of the presbyteral council and the college of consultors; and diocesan assessor for various pastoral services. Furthermore, he was professor of canon law and director of the course in theology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná (Londrina Campus); professor and coordinator of the Pontifical Institute of Canon Law in Rio de Janeiro (Londrina Campus); judge; adjunct judicial vicar and then judicial vicar of the Interdiocesan Ecclesiastical Tribunal of Londrina; and president of the Brazilian Society of Canonists.

On 27 June 2012 he was appointed as titular bishop of Gergi and auxiliary of São Paulo, and received episcopal ordination the following 18 August.

Within the Brazilian Episcopal Conference he has served as member of the Commission for the Ecclesiastical Tribunals of Second Appeal.

In the archdiocese of São Paulo he is currently episcopal vicar for the Santana Episcopal Region.

 

Appointment of bishop of Bonfim, Brazil

The Pope has appointed as bishop of Bonfim, Brazil, the Rev. Fr. Hernaldo Pinto Farias, S.S.S.

Rev. Fr. Hernaldo Pinto Farias, S.S.S.

The Rev. Fr. Hernaldo Pinto Farias, S.S.S., was born on 24 June 1964 in Vitória da Conquista, in the archdiocese of the same name, in the State of Bahia. He carried out his studies in philosophy at the Faculdades Associadas do Ipiranga in São Paulo, and in theology at the Instituto Teológico São Paulo (ITESP) in São Paulo. He was awarded a licentiate in dogmatic theology with specialization in liturgy from the Nossa Senhora da Assunção Pontifical Faculty of São Paulo. He then obtained a licentiate and doctorate in sacred liturgy from the Pontifical Athenaeum of Saint Anselm in Rome.

He gave his religious vows on 25 January in the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament (Sacramentinos) and on 18 July 1992 he received priestly ordination. During his priestly ministry he has served as parish vicar in the following parishes: Santa Ifigênia in São Paulo-SP, São Benedito in Fortaleza-CE, the Cathedral of Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem in Belo Horizonte-MG, the Santuário da Adoração in Sete Lagoas-MG, and Coração Eucarístico de Jesus in Caratinga-MG.

Within his religious Congregation he has held the following roles: formator, provincial bursar, provincial counsellor, provincial superior of the Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe Province, which includes the Sacramentino communities present in Brazil, Argentina and Chile; member of the Centro Eucharistia in Rome; and member of the International Finance Commission at the General Curia in Rome.

In the academic field, he has served as professor of liturgy in various faculties, institutes, seminaries and formation centres; lecturer in liturgical formation courses in the Conference of Religious of Brazil (CRB) and in various dioceses and parishes of Brazil; and coordinator of the Dom Clemente Isnard Liturgical Centre in São Paulo. Furthermore, he was a member of the Directory of the Association of Liturgists of Brazil (ASLI) and assessor for the Episcopal Commission for the Liturgy of the Brazilian Episcopal Conference (2011-2013).

 

Appointment of auxiliary of Porto, Portugal

The Holy Father has appointed as auxiliary bishop of the diocese of Porto, Portugal, the Rev. Vitorino José Pereira Soares, of the clergy of the same diocese, currently vicar of the vicariate of Paredes and parish priest of Castelões de Cepeda and of Madalena, assigning him the titular see of Gisipa.

Rev. Vitorino José Pereira Soares

The Rev. Vitorino José Pereira Soares was born on 19 October 1960 in Luzim, Penafiel, in the diocese of Porto. He attended the minor and major seminaries of the diocese of Porto, attending courses in philosophy and theology at the Catholic University of Portugal (Porto section).

He was ordained a priest for the diocese of Porto on 14 July 1985, where he then held the following offices: military chaplain of the Serra do Pilar regiment in Porto; collaborator in the Nossa Senhora da Conceição parish in Porto; prefect of the major seminary, and director of the diocesan Secretariat for Youth Pastoral Ministry.

He is currently parish priest in the parishes of Castelões de Cepeda and of Madalena, vicar of the vicariate of Paredes, and member of the diocesan pastoral council.
