Resignation of the metropolitan archbishop of Veszprém, Hungary, and appointment of the new metropolitan archbishop

The Holy Father Francis has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the archdiocese of Veszprém, Hungary, presented by H.E. Msgr. Gyula Márfi.

The Pope has appointed as metropolitan archbishop of the archdiocese of Veszprém, Hungary, H.E. Msgr. György Udvardy, transferring him from the office of bishop of the diocese of Pécs.

H.E. Msgr. György Udvardy

H.E. Msgr. György Udvardy was born on 14 May 1960 in Balassagyarmat, in the archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest. He attended elementary school in Szécsény and continued his studies in Esztergom in the technical school for the precision instruments industry, where he obtained a diploma in mechanical expertise.

After completing his military service, in 1980, he entered the archiepiscopal seminary of Esztergom and was ordained a priest on 15 June 1985 for the same archdiocese.

From 1985 to 1988 he was deputy priest in Érsekvadkert and, from 1988 to 1990, parish priest of Csitár. He subsequently continued his studies in Rome, at the Pontifical Salesian University, where he obtained a licentiate in theology, specializing in youth pastoral care and catechetics.

Upon returning to Hungary, he was diocesan inspector for catechesis (1993-2003), and director of the National Catechetic Commission. In 1997 he graduated from the Faculty of Theology of the Péter Pázmány Catholic University of Budapest. Since 1997 he has served as lecturer in catechetics, pedagogy and methodology at the major seminary of Budapest and at the Péter Pázmány Catholic University. In 1991 he was appointed Chaplain of His Holiness. From 2003 to 2004 he was parish priest of the parish of Szent-Ersébet. In 2003 he was appointed as archiepiscopal vicar and bursar of the archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest.

On 24 January 2004 he was appointed by Saint John Paul II as titular bishp of Marazane and auxiliary of the archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest. He received episcopal consecration the following February.

On 9 April 2011 he was transferred to the see of Pécs. The prelate is currently vice-president of the Hungarian Episcopal Conference, member of the Commission for the Doctrine of the Faith and head of catechesis.

 

Resignation of the bishop of Vác, Hungary, and appointment of successor

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the diocese of Vác, Hungary, presented by H.E. Msgr. Miklós Beer.

The Pope has appointed as bishop of the diocese of Vác, Hungary, the Rev. Zsolt Marton, of the clergy of the same diocese, currently rector of the Central Seminary of Budapest.

Rev. Zsolt Marton

The Rev. Zsolt Marton was born on 26 March 1966 in Budapest. He began his high school studies in the Gymnasium of the Scolopian Fathers in Kecskemét, and completed them in a state school. From 1985 to 1988 he studied at the Superior School of Pedagogy in Zsámbék, and then worked as a teacher (1988-1992).

In 1992 he entered the major seminary and, after completing his philosophical and theological studies, on 20 June he was ordained a priest and incardinated in the diocese of Vác.

Since priestly ordination, the Rev. Marton has held the following roles: secretary to the bishop of Vác and notary of the diocesan tribunal (1998-1999); parish vicar in Nagykáta (1999-2000); parish administrator of Dány (2000-2003); prefect of studies in the Central Seminary of Budapest (2003-2008); parish priest in Alsó and Felső-Gőd, and dean of the deanery of Vác (2008-2015).

From 2015 to the present he has served as rector of the Central Seminary of Budapest.
