Appointment of bishop of Cachoeira do Sul, Brazil

The Holy Father Francis has appointed as bishop of the diocese of Cachoeira do Sul, Brazil, the Rev. Edson Batista de Mello, of the clergy of Novo Hamburgo, currently diocesan pastoral coordinator and parish priest of Nossa Senhora da Conceição in São Leopoldo.

The bishop-elect was born in 1964 in São Leopoldo, in the diocese of Novo Hamburgo, State of Rio Grande do Sul. He studied philosophy at the Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos, (UNISINOS) in São Leopoldo-RS, and theology in the major seminary of Viamão-RS.

On 5 December 1997 he was ordained a priest and was incardinated in the diocese of Novo Hamburgo, where he held the following roles: assistant in the seminary of philosophy; rector of the preparatory seminary; rector of the seminary of theology; parish priest of Nossa Senhora de Lourdes in Canela.

He is currently diocesan pastoral coordinator, parish priest of Nossa Senhora da Conceição in São Leopoldo and member of the presbyteral council, the college of consultors and the diocesan council for economic affairs.

 

Appointment of auxiliary bishops of Santiago de Chile, Chile

The Pope has appointed as auxiliary bishops of the archdiocese of Santiago de Chile, Chile, the Rev. Carlos Eugenio Irarrázaval Errázuriz, of the clergy of the same archdiocese, currently parish priest of the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús parish in Santiago, assigning him the titular see of Tanudaia, and the Rev. Fr. Alberto Ricardo Lorenzelli Rossi, S.D.B., currently director of the Salesian Community in the Vatican and chaplain of the Directorate of Security and Civil Protection Services of Vatican City State, assigning him the titular see of Sesta.

 

The Rev. Carlos Eugenio Irarrázaval Errázuriz was born in Santiago, Chile, in 1966. He completed his philosophical and theological studies at the major seminary of the archdiocese of Santiago de Chile.

He received priestly ordination on 18 May 1996, for the archdiocese of Santiago de Chile.

He has held the following roles: vicar of the Cristo Nuestro Redentor parish in Peñalolén, pastoral counsellor for the Pontifical Catholic University, vicar of the Rectorate of the Sagrada Familia, prefect of theology at the Pontifical Major Seminary of Santiago, parish priest of Nuestra Señora del Rosario in Santiago, director of Radio Maria and, since 2011, parish priest of the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús parish in Santiago.

 

The Rev. Fr. Alberto Ricardo Lorenzelli Rossi, S.D.B. was born in Isidro Casanova, Argentina in 1953. He entered the Salesian Society of Saint John Bosco in 1972 and gave his perpetual vows on 15 September 1977. He completed his philosophical and theological studies at the major seminary of Fassolo, Italy. He received a licentiate in theology from the Pontifical Urban University in Rome, and specialized in psychological sciences at the Pontifical Salesian University in Rome.

He received priestly ordination on 24 January 1981 in Genoa Sampierdarena, Italy.

He has served in the following roles: director of the Community in Genoa Sampierdarena, Italy, provincial of the Ligurian-Tuscan Salesian Province, president of the Italian Federation of Male Institutes of Consecrated Life, Inspector of the Salesian Province of Central Italy, Provincial Superior Inspector of the Salesian Province in Chile and, since 2018, director of the Salesian Community in the Vatican and chaplain of the Directorate of Security Services and Civil Protection of the Vatican City State.
