Appointment of auxiliary of Riga, Latvia

The Holy Father Francis has appointed as auxiliary of the archdiocese of Riga, Latvia, the Rev. Andris Kravalis, of the clergy of Riga, vicar general and parish priest of the parish of Saint Mary Magdalene in Riga, assigning him the episcopal see of Migirpa.

Rev. Andris Kravalis

The Rev. Andris Kravalis was born on 11 June 1967 in Gulbene, village of Beļava. He studied at the Rēnekne College of Music from 1984 to 1987 and then entered the Riga Seminary until 1993, when he continued his theology studies at the Theological Faculty of the Notre-Dame-de-Vie Institute (linked to the Teresianum University in Rome) at Venasque in France, diocese of Avignon. At the end of his studies in theology he was ordained a priest on 23 August 1999 for the archdiocese of Riga. He is a member of the Notre-Dame-de-Vie Institute.

Immediately after ordination he became chaplain for young people in the Vidzeme region and from 2000 to 2003 he was responsible for the “cells of evangelization” movement of the parishes in the archdiocese. He became a lecturer at the major seminary of Riga and at the same time assistant vicar at the Cathedral of Saint James until 2001, and was also responsible for the “Meeting of the Spouses” movement.

From 2001 to 2006 he was the spiritual father of the major seminary. In these same years he was head of the Information Centre of the Catholic Church in Latvia and coordinator of the Organization Committee of the Lay Conference.

From 2006 until 2010 he served as chaplain of the Catholic Gymnasium of Riga and pastor of Saint Teresa of the Child Jesus. In 2010 he was appointed parish priest of Saint Mary Magdalene in Riga and, from 2013, also vicar general.
