Resignation of metropolitan archbishop of Lima, Peru, and appointment of new metropolitan archbishop
The Holy Father Francis has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the archdiocese of Lima, Peru, presented by His Eminence Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani Thorne.
The Pope has appointed as metropolitan archbishop of the archdiocese of Lima, Peru, the Rev. Carlos Castillo Mattasoglio, of the clergy of the same archdiocese, lecturer in theology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, former pastor of the parish of San Lázaro in the Rímac district of the city of Lima.
Rev. Carlos Castillo Mattasoglio
The Rev. Carlos Castillo Mattasoglio was born in Lima on 28 February 1950. He carried out his elementary studies in the Dalton de Lince College and his higher-middle studies at the San Agustín College of Lima. From 1968 to 1973 he frequented the Faculty of Letters and Social Sciences at the San Marcos Higher National University of Lima, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in social sciences. He entered the Santo Toribio di Mogrovejo major seminary of the archdiocese of Lima, and was sent to Rome for his ecclesiastical studies, where in 1979 he obtained a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and, in 1983, in theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University.
He was ordained a priest and incardinated in the archdiocese of Lima on 15 July 1984.
In 1985 he obtained a licentiate and in 1987 a doctorate in dogmatic theology, again at the Pontifical Gregorian University.
He has held the following offices: lecturer in theology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (from 1987 up to the present); assessor of the National Union of Catholic Students (1987 to 1998); parish vicar in the parish of San Francisco de Asís (1987-1990); parish vicar of La Encarnación parish (1990-1991); archdiocesan head of university pastoral care in Lima and collaborator in the parish of San Juan Apóstol (1991-1999); vicar for youth pastoral care in Lima, organizer of the office of vicar for youth and head of vocational pastoral care (1996-1999); national assessor of the Episcopal Commission for youth of the Peruvian Episcopal Conference (1990-2001); parish vicar of the parish of San Juan Apóstol (1999-2001); national assessor for youth pastoral care (2000); pastor of the parish of the Virgin Medianera (2002-2009); director of relations with the Church and member of the University Council of the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (2003-2006); pastor of the parish of San Lázaro (2010-2015).
He is the author of various books and articles of a theological nature.
Aside from Spanish, he speaks Italian and French.
Currently, aside from being lecturer in theology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, he is a collaborator in the parish of San Francisco Solano and assessor of the Centre for University Pastoral Assistance of the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru.

The Holy Father has appointed as metropolitan archbishop of Tlalnepantla, Mexico, H.E. Msgr. José Antonio Fernández Hurtado, transferring him from the metropolitan see of Durango.
H.E. Msgr. José Antonio Fernández Hurtado
H.E. Msgr. José Antonio Fernández Hurtado was born on 2 Decembre 1952 in Morelia, in the archdiocese of the same name. He entered the minor seminary of Tula in 1966, and then passed to the seminary of Montezuma in the United States for two years. He subsequently carried out his ecclesiastical studies in the interregional seminary of Tula and obtained a licentiate in youth pastoral ministry and catechetics from the Pontifical Salesian University in Rome (1986-1989).
He received presbyteral ordination on 14 October 1978, and was incardinated in the diocese of Tula, in which he held the following offices: diocesan coordinator of vocational pastoral care (1979-1986); diocesan coordinator of youth pastoral care (1980-1983); rector of the minor seminary (1989-1996); professor of pastoral theology in the major seminary (1990-2005); secretary chancellor of the diocesan Curia and diocesan coordinator of the Commission for the Clergy (1990-1994); member of the college of consultors and the council for economic affairs (1995-2005); vicar general and parish priest of the Cathedral (1996-2005).
On 11 February 2005 he was appointed as bishop of Tuxtepec and received episcopal ordination on the following 11 May. On 26 September 2014 he was promoted as metropolitan archbishop of Durango. Within the Mexican Episcopal Conference he has served as head of the catechetical dimension of the Episcopal Commission for Prophetic Pastoral Ministry.
