Appointment of bishop of União da Vitória, Brazil

The Holy Father has appointed the Rev. Walter Jorge Pinto, of the clergy of the archdiocese of Mariana, as bishop of the diocese of União da Vitória, Brazil. The bishop-elect is currently parish priest of “São José Operário” in Barbacena-MG.

Rev. Walter Jorge Pinto

The Rev. Walter Jorge Pinto was born on 12 February 1963 in Ubá, diocese of Leopoldina, state of Minas Gerais. Before entering the Seminary, he completed a course in agricultural engineering at the Federal University of Viçosa-MG (1982-1986) and in the same institution he obtained a licentiate in phytotechnology (1992-1993). He then completed his seminary studies in philosophy (1996-1997) and in theology (1998-2001) at the São José major seminary in Mariana-MG.

On 1 June 2002 he was ordained priest for the archdiocese of Mariana, in which he held the following positions: parish vicar of Nossa Senhora do Rosário de Fátima in Viçosa-MG; parish administrator of São Sebastião in Pedra do Anta-MG; judge auditor and defender of the bond of the Ecclesiastical Court of the archdiocese of Mariana; counsellor for vocational ministry; parish priest of São João Batista in Viçosa-MG; vicar forane, episcopal vicar; representative of priests; member of the college of consultors.

He is currently parish priest of the Basilica of São José Operário in Barbacena-MG, member of the presbyteral council and archdiocesan counsellor for Family Pastoral Care.
