Appointment of bishop of Río Gallegos, Argentina

The Holy Father has appointed as bishop of Río Gallegos, Argentina, H.E. Msgr. Jorge Ignacio García Cuerva, currently titular bishop of Lacubaza and auxiliary of the diocese of Lomas de Zamora.

H.E. Msgr. Jorge Ignacio García Cuerva was born in Río Gallegos on 12 April 1968. He carried out his studies in philosophy and theology in the seminary of the diocese of San Isidro and received priestly ordination on 24 October 1997.

He holds a licentiate in theology with a specialization in Church history and canon law, at the Argentine Catholic University. In addition he qualified as a lawyer at the Catholic University of Salta.

He was parish vicar of the Nuestra Señora de la Cava (1997-2005) and parish priest of the Santa Clara de Asís parish (2005-2014). He is currently parish priest of the Nuestra Señora de la Cava in Beccar, vice president of diocesan Caritas, regional assessor of prison penitential pastoral care, secretary of the Commission for Prison Pastoral Care of the Argentina Episcopal Conference and chaplain of the various penitentiaries of the Buenos Aires.

On 20 November 2017 he was appointed as titular bishop of Lacubaza and auxiliary of Lomas de Zamora, receiving episcopal consecration on 3 March 2018.

 

Appointment of bishop of Torit, South Sudan

The Holy Father has appointed the Rev. Stephen Ameyu Martin Mulla, of the clergy of Torit, bishop of the diocese of Torit, South Sudan, currently lecturer and dean of the Saint Paul National Major Seminary in Juba.

The Rev. Stephen Ameyu Martin Mulla was born in Ido (diocese of Torit) on 10 January 1964. He attended the minor seminaries of Torit (1978-1981) and of Wau (1981-1983), followed by the Saint Paul National Major Seminary. He studied philosophy in the seminary of Bussere (Wau), from 1984 to 1987, and theology in Munuki (Juba), from 1988 to 1991. He received priestly ordination on 21 April 1991 for the diocese of Torit.

Since ordination he has held the following positions and carried out the following studies: from 1991 to 1992, parish vicar of the Cathedral of Khartoum, Saint Matthew, and responsible for three pastoral areas: Saint John the Evangelist in Shendi, Saint Charles Lwanga in Jebel Aulia and the Saint Bakhita Centre in Kamlin; in 1992, parish vicar of the Blessed Assunta parish in Atbara (Khartoum); in 1993, parish priest of the Saint John the Evangelist parish in Shendi (Khartoum); from 1993 to 1997, studies in Rome at the Pontifical Urban University, obtaining a doctorate in dogmatic theology and residing in the Pontifical College of Saint Peter; since 1997, lecturer and dean of the Saint Paul National Major Seminary in Juba; from 1998 to 2000, teacher at the Comboni College for Adults and Teachers- Evening; from 1999 to 2008, lecturer and consultant of the local Sudanese organization for non-violence and democracy (SONAD); from 2005 to 2010, founder, consultant and counsellor for the local humanitarian NGO, the Horiok Community Association and Development (HODA); and from 2013 to 2016, consultant and chaplain of Women’s Group; consultant and chaplain of the Women Advancement Organization at Guddele (WAO) in Juba; assistant vice chancellor for Administration and Finance of the Catholic University of South Sudan; and deputy director of the Institute of Applied Research and Community Outreach Catholic University of South Sudan (LARCO).
