Resignation of auxiliary bishop of Hwalien, Taiwan

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the diocese of Hwalien, Taiwan, presented by H.E. Msgr. John Baptist Tseng Chien-Tsi, titular bishop of Sululi and auxiliary of the same diocese.

 

Appointment of bishop of Galway and Kilmacduagh, Ireland

The Holy Father has appointed as bishop of Galway and Kilmacduagh, Ireland, H.E. Rev. Msgr. Brendan Kelly, transferring him from the see of Achonry.

H.E. Rev. Msgr. Brendan Kelly

H.E. Rev. Msgr. Brendan Kelly was born in Ballinakill, in the diocese of Clonfert, Ireland on 20 May 1946. He carried out his secondary studies at Saint Mary’s College in Galway and studied theology at Saint Patrick’s College in Maynooth.

He was ordained a priest on 20 June 1971.

After ordination he served for several years as professor at several colleges in the diocese. From 1986 to 1995 he was president of Our Lady’s College in Gort.

From 1995 to 1996 he spent a year with the Arche movement in France, dedicating himself to the disabled.

From 1996 to 2003 he was parish priest in Lisdoonvarna, County Clare. In 2002 he was appointed as canon of the Cathedral Chapter and vicar forane for the deaconry of Kilfenora.

From 2003 to 2007 he was parish priest of Spiddal and since 2006 also vicar general of the diocese of Galway and Kilmacduagh.

On 20 November 2007 he was appointed as bishop of Achonry, receiving episcopal ordination on 27 January 2008.

Within the Irish Episcopal Conference he is president of the Council for Education.
