Resignation of bishop of Tucson, United States of America, and appointment of successor

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the diocese of Tucson, United States of America, presented by H.E. Rev. Msgr. Gerald F. Kicanas.

The Pope has appointed as bishop of Tucson, United States of America, H.E. Msgr. Edward J. Weisenburger, currently bishop of Salina.

H.E. Msgr. Edward J. Weisenburger

H.E. Msgr. Edward J. Weisenburger was born on 23 December 1960 in Alton, in the diocese of Springfield, Illinois. After attending Edison Elementary School and Eisenhower High School in Lawton, Oklahoma, he studied Philosophy at the Conception Seminary College in Conception, Missouri, and Theology at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium. Later, he obtained a licentiate in canon law from the Saint Paul University in Ottawa, Canada.

He was ordained a priest on 19 December 1987 for the archdiocese of Oklahoma City.

Since priestly ordination, he has held the following offices: parish vicar of Saint Mary Parish in Ponca City (1987-1990) and of the Saint Peter Parish in Woodward (1990); deputy chancellor and official of the archdiocesan tribunal (1992-1996); parish priest of the Holy Trinity Parish in Okarche (1995-2002); vicar general (1996-2012) and rector of the Cathedral of “Our Lady of Perpetual Help” (2002-2012). He was also a member of the college of consultors and the presbyteral council.

In 2009 he was named Prelate of Honour of His Holiness.

He was appointed as bishop of Salina, Kansas, on 6 February 2012, and received episcopal consecration the following 1 May.
