The Holy Father has appointed as metropolitan archbishop of Indianapolis, United States of America, His Excellency Msgr. Charles C. Thompson, currently bishop of Evansville, Indiana.
His Excellency Msgr. Charles C. Thompson
Msgr. Charles C. Thompson was born on 11 April 1961 in Louisville, Kentucky, in the archdiocese of the same name. After attending the Saint Charles elementary school at Saint Mary’s and the Moore High School in Louisville (1979), he obtained a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the Bellarmine College in the same city (1983). He carried out his ecclesiastical studies at the Saint Meinrad School of Theology in Saint Meinrad, Indiana (1987). He subsequently obtained a licentiate in canon law from the Saint Paul University in Ottawa, Canada (1992).
He was ordained a priest on 30 May 1987 for the archdiocese of Louisville.
After priestly ordination he held the following offices: parish vicar of Saint Joseph Pro-Cathedral and chaplain of the Bethlehem High School in Bardstown (1987-1990); vicar of the “Saint Francis of Assisi” parish in Louisville (1992-1993); metropolitan judicial vicar (1992-1998); administrator of the St. Peter Claver parish in Louisville (1994-1996); chaplain of the Presentation Academy in Louisville (1995-1997); pastor of the Saint Augustine Parish in Lebanon (1996-2002); Defender of the Bond and judge of the archdiocesan tribunal (1998-2008); pastor of the Holy Trinity Parish in Louisville (2002-2011); and vicar general (2008-2011). In addition he has served as adjunct professor of canon law at the Saint Meinrad School of Theology (2002-2011).
He was appointed bishop of Evansville on 22 April 2011, and received episcopal consecration the following 29 June.
